In December of 2009 a 27 year old Chinese woman named Lin Rong entered Japan illegally after having surgery to alter her fingerprints so that they would appear new to Japanese immigration authorities. She had previously been deported from Japan in 2007 after overstaying her visa and paid about $15.000 to have her prints altered by grafting tips from one hand to the other in a failed attempt to become an illegal alien again.

Her plan failed when police noticed abnormal scars on her finger while investigating her for faking a marriage to a Japanese man. Japan fingerprints foreign nationals whenever they enter the country so that they can better screen out undesirable aliens. This is the first known case of biometric fraud in Japan.
