Macelino de Jesus Martinez called police in Greenfield, California back in 2009 to report that Margarito de Jesus Galindo failed to make good on the dowry that his family had negotiated with Martinez in exchange for the hand of his 14 year old daughter in marriage in accordance with the customs of their homeland located in the Oaxaca region of Mexico. The problem as Mr. Martinez found out when police arrived was that it is illegal to sell a 14 year old girl to an 18 year old man even if she is your daughter. He eventually was convicted of a felony for child endangerment. Both he and Galindo were in the country illegally.

This led to all kinds of headlines all over America because of the bizarre nature of the dowry in excess of the cash amount of $16,000 that Galindo's family agreed to pay Mr. Martinez to arrange the marriage.

I first learned about this from an email I received and I was not sure if he were an illegal alien or not. Most news coverage of this never mentioned his immigration status, but after a little time on Google I nd one. Interesting story to say the least.
